If you are organizing a Future Ready Wills Clinic event for your community, this checklist can help you prepare. Running a successful clinic requires coordination on both sides — community and legal. The more prepared participants are, the more can be accomplished during the visit.

Community preparation checklist

Identify a local contact person

  • One person to serve as the main contact between the community and Friesen Law*
  • Contact person's phone number and email address for coordination
  • Confirm that the contact person is available on the clinic date

Collect participant information

  • Names of people who want to participate
  • Estimated number of participants (to plan the schedule)
  • Note any participants who require accessibility accommodations
  • Note if any participants will need translation or communication support
  • Confirm that participants are 18 or older and are signing documents voluntarily

Choose a venue

  • A private room or office space where documents can be discussed and signed
  • A waiting area for participants who are not yet being served
  • Accessible entry and seating for participants with mobility needs
  • Good lighting and a surface for writing and reviewing documents
  • Venue options include community halls, local libraries, churches, seniors centres, or municipal offices

Confirm timing and scheduling

  • Agree on a date and time with Friesen Law* in advance
  • Allow enough time for each participant (consult Friesen Law* for estimates)
  • Have a schedule or order of participants prepared
  • Confirm travel logistics and any fees related to the location

What each participant should prepare

  • Government-issued photo identification (driver's licence or passport)
  • Names and contact information for their preferred executor
  • Names of beneficiaries and what each should receive
  • Names of any alternate executor or backup beneficiary
  • Names of guardians for minor children, if applicable
  • Names of at least two witnesses who are not beneficiaries of the will
  • Any existing will or related document, if they want to update it
  • Clarity on what assets they own individually versus jointly

Availability now. Future Ready Wills Clinics are available where there is sufficient local interest. To inquire about hosting an event in your community, contact Friesen Law* through the Future Ready Wills Clinics service page.

If a community event is not the right fit, individual house calls for wills and legal documents may also be available.

What happens at a Future Ready Wills Clinic

Each participant meets individually with Friesen Law* to discuss their wishes and complete their documents. Sessions are private. Participants are not required to share their information with anyone in the community.

Documents prepared may include a Last Will and Testament, an Enduring Power of Attorney, and a Personal Directive (healthcare directive). The documents prepared for each participant depend on their individual situation, wishes, and what is agreed upon.

This checklist contains general preparation guidance. Document preparation and fees are confirmed with each participant before any work begins. This page is not legal advice.
