What is family law coaching?

Family law coaching — sometimes called legal coaching or unbundled legal services — is a way of working with a lawyer where the client remains self-represented but receives support on specific parts of their matter. Instead of hiring a lawyer to handle everything, clients can choose help with the tasks they find most difficult.

At Friesen Law*, family law coaching is designed to make practical legal guidance more accessible. Clients are not required to commit to full representation to get help.

Who family law coaching may help

  • People who are self-represented in family court in Saskatchewan
  • People who want to understand their legal options before deciding how to proceed
  • People who cannot afford full representation but need help with documents or process
  • People preparing for a specific court date or filing deadline
  • People who want to understand what a court order or application means
  • People dealing with family law, small claims, or other civil matters

What family law coaching can include

The scope of family law coaching varies depending on what the client needs and what Friesen Law* agrees to provide. It may include some or all of the following:

  • Reviewing documents and explaining what they mean
  • Helping identify the relevant legal issues
  • Explaining court process, timelines, and what to expect at hearings
  • Helping prepare or review court forms and affidavits
  • Helping organize facts, documents, and evidence
  • Preparing the client to speak at court or respond to questions
  • Advocacy or representation where appropriate and agreed upon

Each engagement is different. The services provided are confirmed before anything is started, and pricing is discussed in advance.

What family law coaching does not guarantee

Family law coaching is practical support — not a guarantee of any particular result. No lawyer can guarantee outcomes in court. A coach can help you prepare and understand the process, but the judge makes decisions independently.

  • Family law coaching does not guarantee a favourable court decision
  • It does not automatically mean the lawyer will appear in court on your behalf
  • It does not replace the need to follow all court rules and deadlines
  • It is not the same as full representation unless agreed upon in writing

Choosing your level of support

One of the advantages of family law coaching is flexibility. Clients can choose how much support they need. Options can include:

  • A single consultation to understand your situation
  • Help with a specific document or form
  • Ongoing coaching through a case at a pace that works for you
  • Representation at a specific hearing or for a defined portion of the matter

Not sure whether family law coaching is the right option for your situation? A Family Law Coaching consultation with Friesen Law* can help you understand what options may be appropriate. You can also ask about Family Law Coaching if your matter involves family law issues.
